A Gentle, Effective Approach for Families

When families reach out for therapy, they often feel overwhelmed, guilty, or stuck. At Stay Mindful Therapy, we use a neuroscience-based approach called Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to help parents and children move past those feelings and start fresh.

What Is ART?

ART is a short-term therapy that helps the brain re-store memories in a healthier way. Instead of re-living painful experiences, you simply bring up an image or feeling, follow gentle guided eye movements, and allow your brain to do the work of shifting how that memory is stored.

  • Quick results – Many people notice relief in just 1–3 sessions

  • Gentle process – You don’t need to retell your story in detail

  • Brain-based – Uses your natural neuroplasticity to make lasting changes

Why Parents Benefit from ART First

Before your child even begins therapy, we dedicate the first three sessions to parents (with Renee) and one session with your child’s ongoing therapist. During these sessions, ART helps you:

  • Release guilt, fear, or anger connected to your child’s struggles

  • Process your own past experiences that might affect parenting

  • Approach your child’s therapy with more calm and confidence

  • Co-create a collaborative treatment plan for your family

When parents feel more grounded, children feel safer — and therapy becomes more effective.

Back-to-School Wisdom: Using ART Principles at Home

As kids return to school, both children and parents can feel the weight of change. ART principles remind us that the brain can shift quickly with the right supports. Here are a few actionable ways to smooth the transition:

  • Shift the Scene: If your child fixates on a tough moment (“No one sat with me at lunch”), gently invite them to imagine what could have gone differently. This is a child-friendly way to introduce re-storying, much like ART.

  • Keep It Moving: Just as ART encourages moving through scenes quickly, don’t linger on one rough moment. Instead, help your child notice what went well (“You did find a buddy at recess”).

  • Pair with Calm: Use gentle eye movements (like watching bubbles float or tracing stars with their eyes) before bedtime to settle their nervous system.

  • Practice Predictability: Morning and after-school rituals (snack, walk, special playtime) help your child’s brain know what to expect.

The Bigger Picture

ART is not only for parents — it can also be used with children and teens when the timing is right. But by beginning with parents, we give kids a stronger foundation and help families navigate stressful times like back-to-school with more confidence.
