A New Season, A New Approach
The start of a school year often stirs up big emotions — for kids and parents. Excitement, worry, frustration, guilt, and hope can all show up at once. At Stay Mindful Therapy, we’ve seen that supporting children begins with supporting their parents first. That’s why our new child therapy intake process is designed to start with you, the caregiver.
Why We Begin with Parents
Many families come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, carrying guilt about their child’s struggles, or unsure where to begin. Instead of diving right into sessions with your child, we dedicate the first four intake sessions to parents and caregivers.
Here’s what that looks like:
-
Three sessions with Renee (Tuesday–Friday–Tuesday cadence) to help you process emotions and clarify goals
-
One session with your child’s ongoing therapist, where we transition care and co-create your family’s treatment plan
This approach allows us to:
-
Use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to help parents reduce guilt, anger, fear, or trauma connected to parenting
-
Clarify your child’s needs and strengths
-
Build a collaborative treatment plan that supports your child and you as a parent
By starting here, your child enters therapy with a solid foundation already in place — and you feel calmer, clearer, and supported.
How ART Supports Parents
ART is a gentle, neuroscience-based therapy that helps your brain release stuck feelings. Parents often carry heavy emotions — “Did I miss something? Did I cause this?” — and ART helps shift those burdens so you can focus on your child’s healing with more confidence and calm.
The result? A stronger start for your child, and a steadier foundation for your family.
Back-to-School Wisdom for Parents
Whether your child is starting kindergarten, middle school, or high school, the back-to-school transition can feel bumpy. Here are some therapist-approved tips to make it smoother:
-
Create Predictable Routines – Kids thrive on structure. Use visual schedules or checklists to ease morning and evening transitions.
-
Build in Connection Time – Even 10 minutes of undistracted “special time” daily can regulate your child’s nervous system and strengthen attachment.
-
Name the Feelings – Validate your child’s emotions (“You’re nervous about making friends — that makes sense”) instead of trying to fix them right away.
-
Practice Separation – Role-play drop-offs or create a goodbye ritual (like a secret handshake or note in the lunchbox).
-
Model Calm – Children borrow regulation from parents. If you’re managing your stress (through ART, self-care, or mindfulness), your child feels safer.
-
Celebrate Small Wins – Acknowledge bravery, effort, or kindness — not just grades or achievements.
The Bigger Picture
When parents feel supported and resourced, children adapt to change more easily. Back-to-school transitions become less about stress and more about growth. Our new intake process honors this truth: helping parents first is the best way to help kids thrive.
